Qi Bo replied: “The eight winds send forth evil qi, which becomes meridian wind, touches the five zang organs, and causes disease to arise from the evil qi.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

n the chapter “True Words from High Antiquity,” after discussing the True Persons and the Perfect Persons, we spoke of the Sage \u2013 “dwelling in harmony with heaven and earth, following the pattern of the eight winds.” This shows that the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon<\/em> is consistent throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first section of “Golden Cabinet True Words Discourse” explains what the eight winds are, how they affect the human body, how they influence the changes in our viscera, qi, and blood, what illnesses they cause, what discomforts they bring, and how to treat them. This is an explanation of how the ancient Sages “followed the pattern of the eight winds.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winds blowing from different directions carry different energies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The east wind feels growing, warm, and inspiring. “The east wind blows, war drums beat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The west wind? Bitter, cold, and killing. “The west wind is fierce, geese cry in the vast sky under a frosty morning moon.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The south wind? Hot air. The north wind? Icy cold. “The north wind blows, snowflakes fall.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5462\u500b\u5c31\u4fc2\u53e4\u4eba\u89c0\u5bdf\u5929\u5730\u4e4b\u9593\u5605\u8b8a\u5316\u540c\u806f\u7e6b\u4e4b\u5f8c\u9053\u51fa\u5605\u771f\u8a00\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5514\u597d\u8a8d\u70ba\u590f\u5929\u4eba\u5c31\u5514\u6703\u53d7\u6dbc\uff0c\u51ac\u5929\u4eba\u5c31\u5514\u6703\u4e2d\u6691\u3002\u5514\u5408\u6642\u4ee4\u5605\u55f0\u7a2e\u98a8\uff0c\u6211\u54cb\u53eb\u4f62\u505a\u300c\u8cca\u98a8\u300d\u2014\u2014\u865b\u90aa\u8cca\u98a8\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u865b\u90aa\u4fc2\u8089\u773c\u7747\u5514\u5230\u5605\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\u75c5\u6bd2\uff0c\u8089\u773c\u7747\u5514\u5230\uff0c\u8981\u7528\u986f\u5fae\u93e1\u6216\u8005\u96fb\u5b50\u986f\u5fae\u93e1\u5148\u7747\u5230\u3002\u4f46\u4fc2\u773c\u898b\u70ba\u5be6\uff0c\u773c\u4e0d\u898b\u70ba\u865b\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5462\u5572\u75c5\u6bd2\u53eb\u865b\u90aa\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53e4\u4eba\u8b1b\u300c\u865b\u90aa\u8cca\u98a8\uff0c\u907f\u4e4b\u6709\u6642\u300d\uff0c\u5c31\u4fc2\u8a71\u4ffe\u6211\u54cb\u77e5\uff0c\u8981\u9694\u96e2\u75c5\u4eba\uff0c\u5514\u597d\u53bb\u4eba\u591a\u5605\u5730\u65b9\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through observing and categorizing the winds, the ancients further analyzed their effects on the human viscera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, when the east wind rises, it makes the qi of the liver and gallbladder flourish. And what does the liver\/gallbladder overcome? Wood overcomes earth. Wood represents the liver and gallbladder; earth represents the spleen and stomach. When the liver\/gallbladder is strong, it weakens your spleen and stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the true word spoken by the ancients after observing the changes and connections between heaven and earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not think that in summer people cannot catch a cold, or that in winter people cannot get heatstroke. Winds that come at the wrong time of year \u2013 we call them “thief winds” \u2013 elusive evil, thief wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elusive evil cannot be seen with the naked eye \u2013 like viruses. You need a microscope or electron microscope to see them. Since “seeing is believing,” and what cannot be seen is elusive, such viruses are called elusive evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancients said, “Elusive evil and thief wind \u2013 avoid them when they come.” This tells us to isolate the sick and avoid crowded places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u5916\u9762\u5605\u6c23\u5605\u8b8a\u5316\u5f71\u97ff\u5230\u4eba\u8eab\u9ad4\u5167\u4e94\u81df\u6c23\u6a5f\u5605\u8b8a\u5316\u5605\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5c31\u6703\u8d77\u5167\u98a8\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6b63\u5e38\u4eba\u4fc2\u54a9\u72c0\u614b\uff1f\u300c\u4e0d\u7ba1\u98a8\u5439\u6d6a\u6253\uff0c\u6211\u81ea\u5dcb\u7136\u4e0d\u52d5\u300d\u2014\u2014\u5916\u9762\u6c23\u5019\u5605\u8b8a\u5316\u5514\u6703\u5c0d\u6211\u6709\u4efb\u4f55\u5f71\u97ff\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5514\u6b63\u5e38\u5605\u4eba\u4fc2\u54a9\u72c0\u614b\uff1f\u5916\u9762\u4e00\u6709\u98a8\u5439\u8349\u52d5\uff0c\u88e1\u9762\u5c31\u6709\u547c\u61c9\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e00\u5230\u67d0\u500b\u6642\u5019\u95dc\u7bc0\u5c31\u75db\uff0c\u5c31\u77e5\u8981\u8b8a\u5929\uff0c\u807d\u65e5\u843d\u96e8\u3001\u807d\u65e5\u522e\u98a8\u3002\u5462\u500b\u53eb\u54a9\uff1f\u53eb\u75c5\u614b\u5605\u7279\u7570\u529f\u80fd\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u751a\u81f3\uff0c\u7576\u4eba\u5fc3\u6c23\u5167\u6d1e\u5605\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u807d\u5230\u597d\u9060\u5605\u4eba\u8b1b\u5622\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6709\u500b\u75c5\u4eba\u540c\u6211\u8b1b\uff1a\u300c\u5f90\u5927\u592b\uff0c\u6211\u7169\u5230\u7793\u5514\u8457\u5605\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u500b\u5973\u55ba\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u623f\u7d30\u7d30\u8072\u50be\u5048\uff0c\u6211\u807d\u5f97\u4e00\u6e05\u4e8c\u695a\uff0c\u5165\u6652\u6211\u500b\u8166\u5165\u9762\u3002\u300d\u4f62\u5605\u5f62\u5bb9\u975e\u5e38\u5730\u9053\u2014\u2014\u51fa\u795e\u4e86\uff01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When changes in the external qi affect the qi mechanism of the five zang organs inside the body, internal wind arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the state of a healthy person? “No matter how the wind and waves rage, I stand firm” \u2013 external climate changes have no effect on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the state of an unhealthy person? As soon as there is a slight disturbance outside, there is a response inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your joints hurt at certain times, you know the weather is about to change \u2013 it’s going to rain or wind tomorrow. What is this called? A pathological special ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even more, when a person’s heart qi is hollowed out, they can hear people speaking from far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A patient told me: “Doctor Xu, when I’m so agitated that I can’t sleep, my daughter whispers in another room \u2013 I hear every word, right into my brain.” His description was very vivid \u2013 his spirit had left him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5e38\u8a00\u8aaa\u5f97\u597d\uff1a\u5bb6\u88e1\u9762\u6709\u5167\u9b3c\uff0c\u5148\u81f3\u62db\u5230\u5916\u8cca\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e94\u98a8\u5c31\u4fc2\u8a71\uff1a\u5916\u9762\u5605\u6c23\u5019\u8b8a\u5316\u6703\u89f8\u52d5\u4eba\u4e94\u81df\u6c23\u6a5f\u8b8a\u5f37\u6216\u8005\u8b8a\u5f31\uff0c\u7136\u5f8c\u7522\u751f\u4e00\u7a2e\u5514\u6b63\u5e38\u5605\u6c23\u5605\u6d41\u52d5\uff0c\u6211\u54cb\u59d1\u4e14\u53eb\u4f62\u505a\u300c\u5167\u98a8\u300d\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240\u8b02\u5605\u5167\u98a8\uff0c\u5be6\u969b\u4e0a\u4fc2\u5916\u98a8\u5f15\u767c\u51fa\u569f\u3001\u89f8\u52d5\u8d77\u569f\u5605\u3002\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5514\u53d7\u4f62\u5605\u89f8\u52d5\uff0c\u4f60\u5c31\u4fc2\u5065\u5eb7\u4eba\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5065\u5eb7\u4eba\u90fd\u4fc2\u5514\u53d7\u5916\u98a8\u89f8\u52d5\u5605\u4eba\u3002\u6b63\u5982\u8303\u4ef2\u6df9\u55ba\u300a\u5cb3\u967d\u6a13\u8a18\u300b\u6240\u5beb\uff0c\u5065\u5eb7\u4eba\u300c\u4e0d\u4ee5\u7269\u559c\uff0c\u4e0d\u4ee5\u5df1\u60b2\u300d\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5514\u5065\u5eb7\u5605\u4eba\u4fc2\u9ede\u6a23\uff1f\u898b\u5230\u6625\u5929\u7f8e\u597d\u5605\u6c23\u8c61\uff0c\u5c31\u597d\u958b\u5fc3\uff1b\u898b\u5230\u9670\u96e8\u9023\u7dbf\uff0c\u5c31\u597d\u60b2\u50b7\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5929\u6c23\u5605\u8b8a\u5316\u5c45\u7136\u4ee4\u4f60\u5605\u5fc3\u60c5\u90fd\u8b8a\u57cb\uff0c\u5462\u500b\u8aaa\u660e\u54a9\uff1f\u8aaa\u660e\u4f60\u75c5\u5f97\u597d\u5514\u8f15\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the saying goes: You have to have an inside traitor in your house before you can invite an outside thief.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five winds mean: external climate changes trigger the qi mechanisms of the five zang organs to become stronger or weaker, creating an abnormal flow of qi \u2013 we call it “internal wind.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This internal wind is actually caused and triggered by external wind. If you are not affected by it, you are a healthy person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthy people are those who are not affected by external wind. As Fan Zhongyan wrote in his “Record of Yueyang Tower”: the healthy person “does not rejoice over external things, nor grieve over the self.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about unhealthy people? When they see beautiful spring weather, they become very happy; when they see continuous rain, they become very sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When weather changes actually change your mood \u2013 what does that mean? It means you are quite sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u55ba\u300a\u9748\u6a1e\u300b\u5165\u9762\uff0c\u6709\u4e00\u7bc7\u5c08\u9580\u8a73\u7d30\u8ad6\u8ff0\u300c\u516b\u98a8\u300d\uff0c\u7bc7\u540d\u53eb\u300a\u4e5d\u5bae\u516b\u98a8\u300b\u3002\u88e1\u9762\u8b1b\u5230\uff1a\u5514\u55ae\u6b62\u5404\u7a2e\u98a8\u5e36\u4f86\u5605\u4fe1\u606f\u548c\u80fd\u91cf\u5514\u540c\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u53e4\u4eba\u4ef2\u7540\u6bcf\u7a2e\u98a8\u90fd\u8d77\u5497\u4e00\u500b\u5f62\u8c61\u5605\u540d\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A truly accomplished person, when their heart’s door opens, can let their spirit out. If they see something wrong outside, they immediately pull it back in \u2013 they are in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But those who are extremely sensitive \u2013 their spirit goes out and often cannot be brought back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the\u00a0Miraculous Pivot<\/em>, there is a chapter that discusses the “eight winds” in detail \u2013 it is called “The Nine Palaces and Eight Winds.” It states that not only do the different winds bring different information and energy, but the ancients also gave each wind a vivid name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qi Bo said: “The eight winds send forth evil qi, which becomes meridian wind.” After the eight winds invade the human body, they affect the qi mechanism of the five zang organs and meridians, creating an abnormal flow. This is what triggers “internal wind.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TCM regards internal wind as the “chief of the six excesses” \u2013 the character “excess” in ancient times meant “excessive” or “overly much.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wind is the chief of all diseases.” Wind is the first to open a crack in the body’s doorway. Then, the evil qi of dampness, dryness, summer heat, and cold follow it inside. So, wind is the first evil qi to open our door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Xingyi boxing teacher, Master Ma, once told me a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in Master Ma’s time, factories did not have air conditioning. How did they cool down in summer? They dug air\u2011raid shelters. People used a blower to extract the cool, damp air from underground and blow it into the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A young man, seeking coolness, stood directly in the blower’s stream of air. He was very strong and healthy. The next day, he had a fever and a cold \u2013 and in the end, he died. He was literally blown to death by wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shows that there are things even more subtle and harder to see than bacteria and viruses \u2013 and they can take a person’s life. These are the qi we speak of \u2013 wind qi, dampness qi, cold qi, dryness qi. They can all cause illness, and even death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qi Bo said: “The eight winds send forth evil qi, which becomes meridian wind,” and then “touches the five zang organs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does “touches the five zang organs” mean? The body’s surface is called the “exterior”; the zang organs are called the “interior.” Between the exterior and interior are the “fu” organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a person’s gates are wide open, or if the wind they are exposed to is particularly strong, external evil will touch their internal organs. The zang organs are the deepest, innermost things in the human body. If they are touched by harmful evil, it causes very serious illness \u2013 “touches the five zang, evil qi causes disease.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
